Protecting Your PC

Protecting Your PC From Internet Dangers

If you buy items online, surf the internet or use email then here are several tips to keeping your computer and your personal information secure.

Many people find it very easy to safeguard themselves by installing antivirus protection. Most antivirus protection software protects your computer from known viruses and Trojan horses. If a new virus is detected, your virus software will automatically download the new definition so that your computer will be safe.

Trojan horses are tiny programs that are downloaded inadvertently from the web. These small programs look for personal information and secretly upload it to a database. Many computer users have lost personal and financial information with the use of Trojan Horses.

One of the most damaging of all malicious software is the back door Trojan virus. Unlike many other types of malicious code, the back door Trojan virus is designed specifically to take advantage of vulnerabilities in the operating system such as Windows. The virus uses a back door into the computer too steal personal information, wipe files, or do other types of damage. To make matters worse, some of these back door Trojan horses disguise themselves and hide from anti virus software. Some are even intelligent enough to disable and render unusable your anti virus and firewall software.

You should also protect your computer from Spyware. Spyware is a tiny program that is downloaded usually when you download another program for free off the web. Spyware can be very irritating. Spyware keeps records of what your search for online and then sends you advertisements. Spyware can be difficult to erase.

It is also vital to protect yourself from Spoof emails. Spoof emails look like real emails from Ebay, Paypal, Banks and big credit card companies, but they are fake. Most spoof emails ask you to provide a website with financial information and then they steal this information. If you receive any emails that ask you for financial details, shut your browser, open up a new browser and contact your company's web site personally to see if there is a message for you.

Steps you can take to avoid problems with viruses and Trojans include being vigilant and paying attention to how your computer appears to be running. If you notice a decrease in performance that cannot be easily explained, or if you see an icon you do not recognize on the taskbar, it is a good idea to scan your computer and look for problems. Paying attention to your own computer, and using your own common sense, is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your computer. Free Downloadable PC Security Software

What Features To Look For In Free Downloadable PC Security Software

Computer security software is readily available for free over the internet. While major corporations still produce extensive security software packages that are marketed for consumer purchase, they still release smaller versions that can be downloaded for free. When shopping for a free security software package, try to find ones that have as many of the following features as possible:

Personal Firewalls - these are geared towards blocking active attempts by other terminals to access your computer over the internet. When looking for a free firewall, find one that has an easy user interface. This is because firewall settings are a major determinant in the extent of security they provide, so the interface should allow you to easily adjust these settings to suit your needs.

Anti virus - anti virus software ideally should not only be able to detect and block incoming viruses, but should be able to detect existent viruses that are already in your system and clean them out. Since there are new viruses constantly being made, as well as thousands of existing known viruses, the best thing to look for in a virus software is an extensive database of viruses it can deal with, as well as constant updates on the latest viruses discovered.

Adware and Pop Up Blockers - these are specialized programs similar to firewalls whose primary purpose is to keep ads, spam, and annoying pop ups from flooding your screen when you're accessing the internet. While not necessarily harmful, the sheer volume of these can, if unrestricted by a blocker, bog your computer speed down drastically.

Anti Spyware - spyware is a form of virus that you should definitely consider protecting yourself against. While not a classic self-replicating and destructive virus per se, spyware actually inserts itself into your system and allows a hacker on a remote terminal to access your personal information This can range from simply monitoring and viewing your information and activities, to actually controlling your computer's functions. Spyware protection programs ideally should be able to not only block intrusion attempts, but to detect active spyware that manages to sneak in your system, and cut off its access.

Anti Trojan Programs - Trojan viruses are special viruses that are usually disguised as a different program. For example, a trojan virus may appear to be a harmless game or a music file that you can download. Anti Trojan Programs scan all files that you attempt to download off the internet to make sure they are secure. Like regular anti virus programs, make sure the anti trojan program you select has a good coverage of known trojans.

Network Security

Home Network Security, Simplified

Many home users have unknowingly become computer geeks. Not too long ago using the terms 'router' or 'wireless' signaled the presence of the enthusiast or professional. No longer. Now, routers, hubs, switches, Ethernet cards, firewalls and a bewildering array of other network related buzzwords have entered the home.

By making the installation of these devices easy and inexpensive, vendors opened new sources of revenue for themselves and offered a significant value to home users. Now multiple home computers could share resources without 'sneaker net' - physically transporting files or moving printer connections. Now the whole family could use a single network connection to the Internet, and often without having to string wires all over the house.

What users didn't get is what every networking and computer professional has early on - training in how to secure that gear from hackers.

But, don't panic. The settings from the vendor are often quite good. Now, for some guidance...

RFM is a common acronym known to computer professionals. For the sake of propriety I'll ignore the middle letter, but the first and last stand for Read the Manual. It'll give you common useful settings and configuration information. Now read it again.

ROUTER PORTS

First, change the password and if possible rename the administrator account. The person who bought the same model you did has that information, and he may not be as trustworthy as you.

Port 80 is the standard for HTTP, needed for any web browsing. 'Ports' are network numbers used by software to distinguish traffic. Open that, but only for specific IP addresses or ranges going out. That way, only known computers can generate traffic out of your home network.

That tip is imperfect if you acquire an IP address automatically. I.e. use DHCP, as most do. But many providers allow you to purchase one static address for your router. That's the one that should have access out.

Why do you care about traffic going out? Because you can infect others. Practice safe networking. Don't spread viruses. Also, if you have wireless - see below - you may not know who's on your network. Even if you don't and you're not home, no one can sneak in with a laptop and get out of your network. Yes, it's happened.

You'll have to open Port 80 for all incoming traffic, unless you want to try to track which sites have which IP address - nearly impossible.

If you use a desktop e-mail client, rather than being entirely browser based, you need to open Port 25 for outgoing mail (SMTP) and 110 for incoming (POP3, ignore the acronym meanings).

And that's ALL... usually.

Manual or desktop FTP clients, which you should avoid because of their weak security, will need another, and specialized programs will require a few others. In most cases you'll find their numbers easily discoverable. Keep them to the bare minimum. The rule of thumb with network security is: everything closed by default, allow only those truly needed and only to those who need it.

By the way, if these sound a lot like firewall settings it's because routers and firewalls have some overlapping functionality. Routers route traffic, firewalls prevent or allow it.

WIRELESS NETWORKS

If you have wireless gear, you have more to do. Some, by default, allow anyone nearby to use them to access that network and hence the Internet. That means not only the teenager in the upstairs bedroom, but the neighbor next door and the hacker parked at the curb can access resources inside your home. Yes, that does happen.

Lock down your wireless gear by, you guessed it, reading the manual to learn how to configure passwords and implement any other security features available.

It isn't necessary to dedicate your life to becoming a network or security expert in order to safeguard your resources. But having a home network connected to the Internet via a home router, puts you at extra risk compared to dial-up or single-connection users.

If you don't spend a modest amount of time to take simple steps today, someday you may spend much more after you've been hacked.

Key To Security

Browsers, Key To Security?

Less like the key, really, than a car - browsers provide the means for traveling around the Internet to interesting destinations. Unfortunately, sometimes uninvited passengers climb in. On rare occasions, they even 'carjack' you.

So, what to do?

Users have options, starting with browser selection. Internet Explorer still has over 90% of the 'market' (an odd term for free software), but it's popularity is waning slightly. Firefox and others have inherently better security and the added advantage of running on Linux.

Even when not inherently better, other browsers and operating systems are less popular targets. Until both legislators and software vendors get really serious about security, it's possible to reduce your 'target area' by staying out of the limelight.

Education is another key to 'hardening' browser security.

There are dozens of options in Internet Explorer and other browsers that control what components triggered during surfing are allowed to do. Very few users have much knowledge about what they're for or the effects of setting them one way versus another.

For example, is it desirable to 'Allow ActiveX controls and plug-ins' to Run, or should that be set to Prompt? Individual judgments here, as in all aspects of security in life, have to be made. One factor is your tolerance for responding to prompts versus your willingness to risk infection. After all, you have to decide whom to let in your car, don't you?

It's an undesirable trade-off to be faced with, and one which we can hope someday won't be necessary. But in the interim, it isn't necessary to be a computer geek to experiment and read a bit to find out what these settings affect. The first time you're infected and lose a day recovering, you'll wish you'd spent the two hours finding out.

Proper use is the final leg of browser security. Do you practice 'safe browsing'? Some sites prompt to download ActiveX controls (little programs), dialers, adware and other dynamic content. Do you really know what's likely to happen when you say yes, or are you trusting the source? Trust is necessary, but as the old saying goes 'Trust, but keep your eyes open'.

Most users are unaware of the extent to which using a browser opens up their system to the rest of the world. Being on the Internet means not just seeing, but being visible. And accessing sites usually means being accessible. It isn't just harmless cookies that can be downloaded to your system. Once executable programs are downloaded they often have free rein to your entire system.

Back to education for a moment. Spend some time learning how to lock down your system, outside the browser settings, to make it more difficult for these errant programs to gain Administrator level privileges. Your time will be well re-paid.

So, be aware of what's happening when you navigate to a site. Download only from trusted sources. It's ok to be slightly suspicious of strangers. Don't pick up hitchhikers.

Ok, Mom's going to make some hot chocolate now. Then we'll decide if you can have the keys to the car.

Data Backups

Data Backups - Why Bother?

For many people, computers have become a daily necessity. We use them for work, for correspondence and for entertainment. Many of the files are important documents and losing them would cost us time and money. Backups are the best way to prevent their permanent loss.

Don't make the mistake of believing that backups are only for computer geeks or large corporations, or a task that can be performed 'when I get around to it'. On the contrary, backups are a necessity for everyone. Even if your computer has been running reliably for years, it will fail one day - either through virus attack, user error or just age.

On that day, one of two things will happen. You'll either suffer the grief that comes with losing financial information, passwords, music collections, personal photographs and all the software you've purchased. Or, you can repair or replace the computer and restore from the backups you've been making regularly. The latter is an annoyance, the first a disaster.

There are, unfortunately, an infinite variety of ways to lose data. Besides hardware failure, computers can be destroyed in fires or floods. Hard drives can be damaged by power surges caused by lightning strikes or data lost by a child randomly hitting the keyboard. Viruses can infect systems and erase hard drives.

But there's only one way to get it back - by having it available to be restored.

What to Backup?

For the average user, it's usually not necessary to backup every file on the computer, which would require large storage space. But at bare minimum home users should backup personal files and irreplaceable software. Spreadsheets with financial records not easily available from other sources, legal documents, work-in-progress... the list is large.

But backups needn't be.

The easiest way to do backups is to use the backup software that comes with the operating system. Windows has a free, usable backup program while similar ones are available for Mac, Linux and others. The software is easy to use and backing up is a simple matter of selecting which folders to backup. It even has a scheduler so backups can be automated to occur at convenient times.

For a modest sum backup software can be purchased that will only backup files changed since a certain date, or since the last backup. Alternatively, new files could be copied daily to a backup folder where they can be backed-up by your backup program. To ease the task of identifying which, use the Search option to list files 'newer than X'. Once the list is complete, copy them into the backup folder and run the program for just that folder.

Some data, such as e-mails are only slightly more difficult to protect. Some e-mail clients can be configured to keep copies of received and sent e-mails on the e-mail server. When that's not an option, most can export messages to a file, which can then be backed up.

Backups can be done to any kind of removable media - writeable CD's/DVD's, removable hard drives or even the newer 'keychain' devices that plug into a USB port. Even floppy disks can still be used in many cases. Documents often take a small amount of space. Just set aside 7 disks and rotate them from week to week.

Daily backups are one more thing to do in a busy schedule. But the day you lose that file you need and can't restore, you're going to be a whole lot busier.

Notebook Computers

Notebook Computers in the Age of the Internet

Everyone knows that our world cannot exist without computers. Ever tried to make a purchase at a convenience store when their computers are down, ever waited for someone to make change when their register computer is down, or have you ever tried to find a book in a library when the system is down? If you have ever experienced one of these inconveniences, you know that our world hinges on whether or not our computers are working.

Remember when you told your teacher that the dog ate your homework? Did she believe you? Probably not. Now the excuse is my computer crashed, my printer wouldn't print, or we were out of ink. Even kids rely on computers to do their schoolwork. The days of pen and pencils are almost over. In fact most students know more about computers than their teachers or parents. They don't even remember a time without computers.

As computers become more and more intuitive and powerful, we must proceed with them. If you are still among the population that resents the encroachment of the computer, think about this scenario. If Eve in the Garden of Eden had access to the Internet, she could have looked up information about snakes. She would have found out that they have forked tongues and an evil reputation. Instead of listening to the snake's lies, she would have thrashed him with a tree branch. Think how much better our world would be now.

The best present any graduate can get this June is a desktop computer or a laptop. In my day, girls were given matching luggage to take their clothes to school. Yes, I know I am dating myself, but I do have a point. Today buy your child a computer and let them take their clothes is a paper sack. They don't care; an old gym bag will do. I know; schools have computer labs, but they are always full. Wouldn't you rather your son or particularly your daughter not be out of the dorm or apartment working on projects or papers? Also, when your newly graduated senior has moved away to school, e-mail will become your best friend. Even if you hate computers, you will learn to love them because they will become your link to your child. The nest will never be empty as long as you have e-mail.

Computers are links to the outside world. The world has never been more accessible or smaller. You have to keep up or you will be left behind and who wants to be the last straggler on the planet? Not me!

After years as an educator and more degrees than she can count, Frances Coleman now writes professionally. She is a prolific reader with an advanced degree in research techniques. See her review of notebook computers.

Data Recovery Software

Data Recovery Software: At Your Rescue

Computers are an integral part of our lives. They are used at every juncture, and of course play a major role in businesses. In fact, the smooth working of small, medium, big and very big enterprises depend heavily on the computer. But they arent perfect, and it would be unfair to consider them as perfect.

Hence, as long as there is data, there would also be the fear of data loss.

If there is effective recovery system of that data, it could mean the judgment day for the precious information that you so carefully stored in your computer. At worst, it could mean the ruin of your business as well.

There are various data recovery methods, the best considered among them are Data Recovery Softwares. Data Recovery Software recovers deleted files and lost files, as well as formatted, damaged or corrupted data from the hard disk or data storage media.

Using data recovery software is no rocket science. So, it is advised that if you want to install one in your computer, it should have a user friendly design, robust feature set and efficient data recovery capability. You need to: look for software that has the above and also affords multi-file-system compatibility. You should preferably go for software that can retrieve data deleted from the recycle bin, hard drive or even those data which are lost due to accidents, like power cuts.

* Installation- Installing the data recovery software in the computer is what comes after choosing the right software. In a laymans term, a good software is one that can be easily installed and even a novice user should not find it too tough to install such a software.

You need to: look for software that is user intuitive, which is, it should require minimum effort from your side. Look for data recovery software in which all instructions are clearly stated before you, and you just have to select your option. Let the program do the rest. Most superior data recovery softwares these days are user friendly.

* Effectiveness- An effective Data Recovery Software should be able to retrieve data and put it back to its original state.

You need to: look for data recovery software that is not only easy to use but effective as well. After all, what you need is your precious data retrieved.

* Search Capabilities- good data recovery softwares have higher searching capabilities.

You need to: simply look for software that would allow you to look for your data in various ways, for example-sort by name, date, size and keyword.

* Support Tools- They are one of the most essential elements of the software. They are basically the fall-back options if something goes wrong while installing the software. The more the support solutions, the better.

You need to: select software which answers all your queries and has a wide variety of questions to answer regarding the data recovery installation process.

Choosing Right Battery

Choosing Right Battery for Your Laptop

Laptops usually consume more power and the batteries should be lightweight and small to fit easily into the laptop. With a typical battery, your laptop can run for about ninety minutes. This will not be sufficient, as you may have to use your laptop frequently while on the move. You can use large and heavier batteries to solve this problem.

Laptop batteries are designed specific to the make and model of the laptop. Thus you require the appropriate battery for your laptop. Depending on the type of battery, the life of the battery will vary. However there are some common features that differ from the normal batteries used for household purposes: Laptop batteries can be recharged. They have many internal cells and there is a small PCB within each laptop battery. The location and shape of terminals vary across different models; Similar to all batteries, electrochemical reaction is created which forces a stream of electrons that traverse from one position to another in the laptop batteries and there are negative and positive terminals which send and receive electrons. However, rechargeable batteries are more complex than normal batteries as the power that is produced by the electrochemical reaction must be reversible. Therefore you should take care when recharging, for ensuring that they perform better.

Today there are many battery manufacturers who supply compatible batteries to Laptop makes such as IBM, HP-Compaq, Dell, Acer, Sony, Toshiba and Apple. There are three types of laptop batteries available in the market today. Before you plan to purchase, you should know the difference among them to decide on the right type of battery for your laptop.

NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) batteries were the first rechargeable batteries available for laptops. As they delivered a high output and the cost was also low, most manufactures earlier preferred them. Now they are not available widely as replacements have come that are much lighter with better performance.

NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries can still be used in the older laptop models. They are more reliable than the NiCd batteries due to their higher output. The NiMH batteries are also safe to use and also cheaper to manufacture. The only disadvantage is the memory effect in the NiMH batteries, as it can remember the battery discharge levels and gives varying performance if the battery is not fully discharged.

LiON (Lithium Ion) batteries are currently used in laptops of latest models. LiON batteries have no memory effect compared to the NiMH batteries and are also lighter than both the above types of laptop batteries. Thus, Lithium Ion Batteries have become more popular and also expensive because of these advantages. If you can afford for the Lithium Ion battery, this is the best solution; you can go for a compatible NiMH battery if you have budget limitations.

A number of specialist battery manufacturers supply batteries to laptop companies based on the specifications, design and configurations for a particular model and quality terms agreed. Even the power requirements and available space for installing the battery vary from a laptop model to another and hence the laptop manufacturers order suitable battery packs for their various models. When you plan to replace the battery, you can contact the authorized dealer of your laptop manufacturer to ensure that you get the correct type of replacement.

Laptop Battery Life

Laptop Battery Life: How to Get More of It

Scientists can send a man to the moon, launch satellites into space, and clone life forms, but as of yet, no one has been able to develop a laptop battery that lasts a full working day. If Intel has its way, the 8 hour laptop battery will be available in 2-4 years. In the meantime, laptop users need a solution now for how to increase battery life. Until the eight hour battery makes it's debut, there are a few ways that you can get more life from your laptop batteries.

First, there are the obvious solutions like closing software programs that you're not using. Another is to set your computer to hibernate when you walk away. Although most of us realize that we should do this, what normally happens is that the few moments we assume we'll be away from our computer turns into a few hours. Until the longer life laptop battery hits the shelves, using hibernate or standby is one of the most important things you can do to preserve the life of your laptop battery.

To set your Windows computer to automatically go into hibernate mode, open your control panel, select "power options," choose the "hibernate" tab, and check "enable hibernation." After that, click the "power schemes" tab and set the amount of idle time after which you want your computer time to hibernate.

Mac users can set their sleep mode preferences by selecting "system preferences," clicking the energy saver tab, and then clicking "sleep." The earlier you set your computer to sleep, longer the battery will last. Sure, it's a bit annoying to have the screen saver appear after 1 minute of non-use, but when you consider the savings from the laptop battery's point of view, it's a smart trade-off.

Aside from using less power, you can actually condition your battery to retain more power. Just like an Olympic athlete conditions to get into optimal shape, so too can your laptop battery. When you purchase a new laptop battery, it comes to you completely empty of charge. Though most of us can't wait to get back to using our laptops cord-free the moment possible, it's important to let the battery accumulate a full and complete charge.

For the first 2 or 3 cycles only, you'll want to completely deplete your battery before recharging to the max. This "trains" your battery to understand its own power capacity. After those first few cycles, you'll want to recharge your laptop battery, ideally, before it depletes entirely.

When to get a new laptop battery
If you've got to recharge every 2 hours, it's time for a new battery! Most of us put off buying a laptop battery until the computer practically won't hold a charge at all. Buying a laptop battery may not be as interesting a purchase as buying something new for your closet, but once it arrives, you might wonder why you waited so long to make your life so much simpler. Once you get it installed, try out some of these tips. If you treat your new laptop battery well, it may just last until the 8-hour battery finally becomes available.

Surfing the Internet nowadays can be very dangerous. With all the viruses, spywares, adwares, identity thieves and hackers circulating for surfers to victimize, opening and downloading an attachment sent by your friend can be very scary.

This is why Internet security is a necessity in all computers to prevent yourself from getting victimized by people who wants to steal from you or from viruses programmed to destroy your important files.

Without protection, it would be like leaving the keys to your front door visible and letting anyone in and install spy cameras around your house without you even knowing about it. The same applies to your computer. Since all your files today are stored in your computer, such as financial and personal information, you wouldn't want to let anyone take a peek in your computer.

While it is true that the internet can provide you with a lot of benefits, it is also a fact that the internet is also abused by certain people looking for a way to destroy your computer or steal from you by using your financial and personal information. This is why it is important for you to download Internet security software to enable you to put a lock in your computer and prevent different malicious programs and people from entering and gaining access to your computer.

Today, there is quite a number of software that offers Internet security available for download in the Internet. However, most of these software programs are for sale and you need to pay for it in order to get the full version of the program.

There are quite a few numbers of Internet security programs that are free. However, most of these programs are only in demo version and it has a specific trial period on how long you will be able to use the program. After the trial period expires, you will have to pay for the software program in order to continuously use it to protect your computer.

There are also free Internet security programs that offer unlimited uses. However, most of these programs only offer little features and minimum security for your computer. Usually, these programs only have a limited amount of virus definitions installed and are not able to block new viruses effectively.

Free Internet security programs can also be useful. It can serve as a temporary security program for your computer while you look for a different Internet security program to install in your computer.

So, if you still don't have an internet security program installed in your computer or is still trying to find the best kind of internet security program, you can always download free versions of these programs to get you some protection for your computer. With this, you can be at least confident when you are surfing the Internet.

Always remember that free Internet security programs should only serve as a temporary fix until you find a good Internet security program to install in your computer.

Once you find a good Internet security program, you can always uninstall the free Internet security program and install your preferred Internet security program that offers maximum protection from viruses, malware, spyware, hackers and identity thieves.

So, if you are still looking for a program that offers complete protection from malicious software programs but you want to surf the Internet, this doesn't necessarily mean that you have to surf the Internet naked. Try and install free versions of Internet security programs to at least give you some protection.

COMPUTER SECURITY:

Securing your Computer to Keep Up with Internet Threats

When spyware invades a computer system it monitors, records and sends out to intruders information on your computer usage and internet habits and it can possibly detect private banking and security information which could result in identity theft. Computers are easily infected with spyware while users click around online or download freeware.
The Norton Internet Security Professional software is one of the top rated computer security tools for its ability to detect and fix viruses, Trojan Horses, spyware, joke programs and other malicious codes that can end up in security risks. The capabilities of all types of spyware are numerous, ranging from annoying consequences such as pop up to detrimental occurrences such as identity theft and complete computer failure.

Using the Norton security tool you can also screen incoming emails so as to avoid any that are linked with malicious viruses. However well the Norton Security Professional tool works, it is unlikely the program will catch all threats, especially spyware because of its widespread possibilities.

To more thoroughly guard yourself and your computer from spyware threats, use more than one spyware security tool, such as Ad-Aware by LavaSoft or Spybot search and destroy. Both of these programs are free for download and they work by scanning specifically for known and defined spyware threats. Using more than one internet security tool is necessary for catching both virus and spyware threats.

Virus

Clean Your Computer From A Virus

Having a virus on your computer can slow down your computer, install spy ware, or let hackers into your computer to steal your information.
Knowing how to clean your virus-infected computer is easy. Here are some tips to show you how.

As soon as you thing your computer might be infected you should disconnect your computer from the Internet and any networks you computer might be on.
This is to ensure that the virus does not spread to other computers.

If you have an anti-virus program installed make sure it is updated first then run a full system scan.
The anti-virus might not detect the virus if the program is not updated.

Some anti-virus programs will detect the virus, but will not be able to remove it.
If that is the case, you can get a different program but downloading it from a non-infected computer or you can go to your local computer store and get a different one there.

Most anti-virus programs will ask you to restart you computer after it is finished scanning. Once you restart you computer run another scan to make sure that the virus is gone. When you restart your computer make sure that it is still disconnected from the Internet and other networks.
The best way to combat against viruses is to be cautious of programs and files you download. Do not open any e-mail messages or attachments you do not recognize. Get a good anti-virus program that is updated frequently and run system scans regularly.

Computer Memory

Computer Memory is an Essential Part of the Computer

Computer memory is an essential part of the computer because it allows it to store vital information that you will need. Whether the information is in the form of pictures, data or sounds, a computer with a lot of memory can store it for you. There are three basic types of computer memory and you will need to know a little bit about each to ensure your computer is running effectively.

Random access memory or RAM is the same thing as your computer memory. RAM is the main memory center, so essentially, it is the most important. Your RAM is used almost every second you're on your computer each day. The reason RAM is so crucial is that it is used to store your files and programs and it affects many other computer aspects as well.

DDR computer memory can be bought to increase the amount of memory you have, but first you will want to learn a little more about your computer. Understanding how it works will help you work better with your computer.

The more RAM computer memory your computer has, the faster it will work for you. If you find that you're computer has been very slow lately, you might want to look into buying some DDR for it. If you aren't sure what to buy or how to install it, it's best to let a professional do it this time around. You will find that all electronic stores that sell RAM will offer optional installation services for a small fee. If you choose this option, it would be a great idea to ask them exactly what they did so you can do it yourself if the need ever arises again.

But, if you know a little something already about computer memory, why not install your DDR program yourself? It will save you some time and money and your computer will be back to working at optimal speed in no time. Either route you choose, don't neglect the health of your computer. If it starts working differently than it ever has, get it checked out or troubleshoot the problem yourself. This will ensure that it stays working great for years to come.

Origins of Reggae

The Origins of Reggae Music by Nor Nan

Reggae music actually has a very long history, possibly a longer history than some other kinds of music. Although it is believed that reggae is derived from many different kinds of music, its exact origins still remain a mystery. However one thing that we can be certain of is that reggae has its origins in the Caribbean, and it has been played there for a very long time. Local people in the Caribbean use this kind of music for both entertainment and for specific purposes. Since becoming popular in the rest of the world, reggae has taken its place at the top of all the types of music that influence many of the world's population.

In fact, it is quite obvious now that reggae has been used and applied with many different types of music to create new musical genres such as pop, rock and folk music. However, it is quite surprising that even though reggae has very unique characteristics, still they can perfectly merge into other kinds of music very smoothly. You may have heard many songs that are a combination of reggae and other kinds of music as mentioned earlier.

Hopefully, the information presented so far has been relevant. You might also want to consider the following. However, when you read up to this paragraph, you may become more eager to know about the place of the origin of reggae music. Let's guess! Yes, some of you may already know that it came from Jamaica. So, where is Jamaica then? Jamaica is a small island nation of the Greater Antilles.

In fact, Jamaica is also the home of other kinds of music too. As many of you may be aware, the Caribbean islands are the home of many different kinds of music native to the region, such as calypso, ska and so on, and reggae is one of these.

Even nowadays, as mentioned before, reggae is influencing many kinds of contemporary music. I would like to give you some more valid examples. In the modern music world, everybody has heard of hip hop. Hip hop music is very popular among teenagers and young adults. However, the secret is that hip hop music is one of the music types that has its background in reggae music.

Also, if we take a close look, we discover that another type of music called rap music is also derived from reggae. Therefore, it is quite obvious that reggae, apart from being popular in its own right, has developed into other styles of music to produce completely new music that can engage a big audience covering different age groups.

However, people who still love the original reggae style will probably not change their tastes, because they still love the original rhythm and lyrics of reggae, as well as their favorite reggae singers. You can't predict when knowing something extra about reggae music will come in handy. If you have learnt anything new about the keyword of this article, you should file the article where you can find it again.

Learning and Practicing

Learning and Practicing Music by Shubhlabh

The excitement of a new adventure is enough to provide an ample supply of positive motivation for the first several weeks of the instrumental music experience. Once the initial enthusiasm wears off, it is important to immediately develop wholesome practice habits which will guarantee a successful and personally gratifying process for your child. Your support and guidance will be the key factors in establishing the practice schedule insuring the attainment of musical goals.

For our first year elementary players, we like to see three days per week of home music practice - even if just a few minutes. The first year is "exploratory" and our goal is to instill a love for music. We encourage students to play at home for their parents. Practice is encouraged but not heavily stressed. For further ease it's suggested to buy and download Steve Conway's music and songs which are top in music industry at present, especially "At's About Time".

The most effective home rehearsal program for the second year elementary players is based on a fifteen minute session four to five times per week dedicated to quality practice. It is suggested that you and your young musician mutually agree on a practice time, and a special area of your home designated for their area of musical study. A final one or two minute recital is always effective in building performance responsibilities.

Every instrumentalist enjoys the opportunity to display their talents. You might even ask for a paragraph of what new progress was made during the practice. A special calendar can also serve as a reminder as well as a reward poster for the commitment needed to accomplish the assigned material. Remember, positive reinforcement is the most effective communication you can share in this important quest.

As students mature, it is vital to develop a discipline which makes home music practice a natural part of the day. Although many new concepts are taught during instrumental music rehearsals, the limited time does not afford the personal attention which is vital in developing the technical facility required for the upcoming years of musical exploration. The cooperative efforts of the instrumental music director, the student musicians and the willing parent/s constitute the proven recipe for success.

Let your kids explore music.

The first year a child plays an instrument is an exploratory year. The goal of the music educator is not to quickly turn a child into a virtuoso, but to help instill a love of music.
Try group lessons.

We find that most kids do better in group lessons because they like the social interaction.
Show up for lessons.

Parents should try to attend a child's first few music lessons. Knowing what's going on in the class will allow you to better help your young music student at home.

Help kids learn the basics.

Learning the fundamentals is very important. Violin students, for example, will need to learn to hold the bow correctly and develop proper posture.

Stay connected.

One of the most important things you can do as a parent is to stay in touch with your child's instructor. You may find that email is the easiest way to do this.

Keep the instrument handy.

Children can get really attached to their instrument. It's important for parents to leave the instrument out, rather than storing it away, so that the child can always have access to it.

Don't make practice a chore.

In the first year of study, don't force practice. Instead offer encouragement and show that you're interested in how your son or daughter is doing. When you're folding laundry or doing paperwork, for example, have your child perform a mini concert of songs he or she is learning.

Don't expect flawless play from your young musician. The clearest indication that child is successful in music education is that he or she will show love and enthusiasm for the music.

Instrumental music means more to your child than just playing an instrument. It offers an opportunity to experience a whole new level of communication. This artistic language will be with them for a lifetime. These formative years of music education can open up a world of aesthetic possibilities which will bring new meaning to the growth and development of your child. Let us join hands in establishing a solid foundation of growth by creating a disciplined practice schedule at the onset of their instrumental music career.

You should download and buy music from http://www.steveconwaymusic.com for further practicing and help. This will help you a lot in making your child's career. Steve Conway music is selected in Top 10 across the global music industry by NME (World's Fastest Music Company and Magazine).

What is Singing

What is Singing? by Anthony Reyes

The act of creating melody using the voice is called singing, and a singing individual is termed as a singer or a vocalist. Singing is often distinguished from speech, and in many ways singing is regarded as a type of sustained speech. Hence, it is thought that anybody who has the ability to speak can also sing.

The musical sounds produced through the act of singing are called songs. Songs may be a capella, which means that it is sung without accompaniment, or they may be sung with accompaniment in the form of musicians and musical instruments. Singing may also be performed alone, or it may be performed with a group, with a choir being an example.

Singing may be done for simple enjoyment and this is done informally, such as singing while in the shower or singing in a karaoke bar. It may also be done very formally, as exemplified by professional singing for a performance, whether live in front of a watching crowd or in a recording studio. In this case, singing done on a professional scale, or at least on a high amateur level, entails the presence of some natural talent and a significant amount of regular, consistent and serious practice, which may be further enhanced with training and instruction. In general, professional singers develop and shape their careers around a particular musical genre. Furthermore, it is not uncommon for them to submit themselves to voice training under a voice coach all the way through their career. The quality of a singing voice depends largely on the physical make-up of an individual. In particular, body parts such as the lungs, larynx, cavities of the head and chest, and other structures like the tongue, palate, lips, teeth, and the muscles of the neck, chest and abdomen.

Singing voices may be classified according to voice type, and is further subdivided according to male and female voices. The classification of voices involves the consideration of vocal range, vocal tessitura, vocal transition points like lifts and breaks in the voice, vocal weight, vocal timbre, vocal registration, physical characteristics, speech level, and the like.

The science of classifying voices originally arose in the development of European classical music, generally for the purposes of opera, such as in assigning certain roles according to type of voice. The classification of voices is hardly used in more modern singing varieties. Nonetheless, at present there are various systems of voice classification employed in the genre of classical music. Examples include the choral music system, the German Fach system, and several others. However, none of these systems is conventionally acknowledged or put to use universally.

Be that as it may, most of the systems of voice classification recognize seven specific main voice types, and this is also divided according to sex. Females are generally classified into three different voice types, which are soprano, mezzo-soprano and contralto. Men, on the other hand, are generally categorized into four different voice types, and these are countertenor, tenor, baritone and bass. Furthermore, the classification of voice type in children of pre-pubescent years also entails the consideration of treble. In addition to this, further sub-categories are applied within each of these specific main voice types, with consideration of particular vocal characteristics such as vocal weight and coloratura.

Feel the impression

Feel the impression with Nickelback

“Great music is that which penetrates the ear with facility and leaves the memory with difficulty. Magical music never leaves the memory”. As Sir Thomas Beecham rightly music is the food for the soul of all music lovers. In fact any kind of music leaves an impression on everyone. Nickelback is one such Canadian rock band that has left a great impression on its listeners. Nickelback was formed in Hanna in Alberta by Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger and Ryan Peake. As time passed by, Nickelback outshone as a rock band and received huge success in every part of the world. In fact their hit single "How You Remind Me" from their very third album scrapped to the zenith on the Canadian Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100. In fact the song as well as the album received huge acclamations which made Nickelback the third Canadian rock band to make this possible after the hit the “American Woman” by The Guess Who and the second being "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

When Nickelback started as a band they did not have enough funds to finance the recording of a song of an album. Chad had to borrow cash from his step father and then used a friend’s studio in Vancouver to record their first album. Nickelback then went on board on cross country tours across several countries and this led to high publicity and promotion of their album as well as them as a successful rock band. In 2000, Nickelback independently released their second full album which was titled “The State”. In fact during this time Canada witnessed the passing of a law that proved to be highly beneficial for Nickelback. The law stated that Canadian content requirement must be increased for Canadian radio. Now due to this law local radio stations were rigorously looking out for some Canadian rock bands that they could sing for them and promote the Canadian radio stations. It was then when Nickelback gained a lot as a result of this law and their popularity reached new levels.

Nickelback Music has won nine Juno Awards, an American Music Award, an MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film (Hero), and a World Music Award for World's Best-Selling Rock Artist. The band also got nominated for seven Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards and twelve Juno Awards. In fact on the 4th of December 2006, Nickelback won three Billboard Music Awards out of five nominations.

Nickelback Music has proved to be one rock band that believes in the spirit of using music as medium to spread the message of love and peace. In fact their song “If Every One Cared” is out there to prove this point and make people realize that our world is a much better place to live in and it is we who can make this place a better place to live in. The song “If Every One Cared” has actually outshined its way and lived up to the expectations of the audience and hence proved to the audience to expect some good quality music from the band and that the songs are meant to leave an impression on everyone.

Guitar Tuning

Guitar Tuning And How To Tune A Guitar

There are many different ways to approach guitar tuning. We'll touch on a couple of the more effective methods on how to tune a guitar. Not necessarily the most popular as some methods, though extensively used, are considered 'bad habits' rather than genuine, effective guitar tuning alternatives.

The guitar standard tuning is as follows:

STRING - 6th String (bottom, bass, low) NOTE - E
5th String - A
4th String - D
3rd String - G
2nd String - B
1st String (top, treble, high) - E

Tips For Any Guitar Tuning Method

First, lets cover a few things that every player should know when taking the proper approach to guitar tuning and how to learn to tune guitar.

Learn to attach the strings to the machine heads properly. Never try to tune down to a note. Stretch the strings and tune up to the note. Tuning heads have a certain amount of 'play' in them so make a couple of deep bends and then fine tune the string. Before tuning a suspect string, check it against both adjacent strings to determine which string is actually out of tune. The string you suspect may not even be the culprit. When tuning a guitar with a vibrato arm, tune the string, give the arm a good shake, stretch the string, give the arm another shake and fine tune.

Veterans of guitar playing will already know these things so if you're a beginner and just learning to play the guitar, you're already ahead of the game if you implement these practices into your routine. For a great tool visit http://www.guitarmusician.com/guitar-tuner.htm

Here's A Quick Method For Guitar Tuning

Tune the treble (high) E string to an A440 tuning fork by holding your finger on the 5th fret, then tune the open B string to the open treble E string – listening to the interval of a fourth. It's easy to hear the fourth in that register.

Play the A note fretted at the 2nd fret of the G string, and compare it to the open treble E string – you're listening for a perfect fifth interval.

Fret the 2nd fret E note on the D string and compare it to the treble E string open. Double check this by fretting the E note on the 14th fret of the D string.

Now tune the 7th fret harmonic on the A string (an E note) to the open treble E string.

Finally, tune the 5th fret harmonic on the bass E string to the open treble E string.

This is a simple guitar tuning method that works well.

The City of Live Music

Anyone who lives in Austin knows why the city council adopted the slogan “live music capital of the world” in 1991. For those just visiting, the city offers many opportunities to find out.
The famed music scene of Austin began in the 60s and 70s at the Vulcan Gas Company. Musicians played country music here to crowds of loud and enthusiastic fans. Willie Nelson moved to Austin in 1965 and kick started his career in front of these audiences. He went on to become one of the most successful country music artists of all time. Not long after, the Vulcan Gas Company became known as the Armadillo World Headquarters, or just The Armadillo, and Austin’s music really took off.

As the music scene grew more popular, Austin gained a reputation for welcoming struggling artists. Bands and singers knew they would find receptive audiences at numerous informal establishments and the type of music played expanded to include jazz, blues, rock and roll, and everything in between.

The music scene in Austin has fostered the career of many now famous musicians. Perhaps the most legendary, Stevie Ray Vaughan is one of the most influential blues guitarists in the world. He first played at Antone’s, the club founded by his mentor and record producer, Clifford Antone.

Television and annual festivals have helped Austin develop into the live music capital. The show Austin City Limits first aired on PBS in 1975. The live music experience showcased the variety of artists heard in Austin and helped significantly to grow the city’s music reputation. Almost every kind of music imaginable can be heard at the three day Austin City Limits Music Festival held every September. Since its inception in 2002, it has become one of the premier music festivals in the country.

The Sixth Street area of downtown Austin houses the largest collection of live music venues and is the location of the South by Southwest Festival. SXSW, as it is known, is a music and film festival that has generated more revenue than even the Texas Longhorn’s home games.

Certainly, the times of year that coincide with the music festivals are the most exciting for fans of live music. At any other time of year, tourists may be disappointed with the atmosphere of the famed Sixth Street area. Several of the original, small music venues have closed and in their place are more profitable bars and clubs.

While some may believe the eclectic, small feel of Austin’s music scene is waning, others still revel in the live entertainment.

Singers

Singers Need Correct Posture by Georgia Reader

What is excellent posture and why is it important for a singer? First of all your voice comes from you and your body, which becomes the instrument. When you sing you have to be aware of your breathing, your posture, and how you present yourself to your audience.

To become a good singer, you must have good posture. When a vocalist starts to sing, the stance and the location of the feet with the way the knees are placed is very important for proper sound production. Also, if the posture of the chest and shoulders are correct this will enhance the voice while singing.

Students who are beginners are often told by their instructors that to have good posture while singing they must keep their back very straight so that they can inhale deeply and control the exhaling process. Chest must be held high with the shoulders held back, and the student should imagine their spine lengthening with their chins tucked under. Poor posture encourages back pain and tension. In fact, the tension could spread from the neck to the shoulders and to the back if the person is not completely relaxed. Keep in mind that the vocal cords are in the neck. So if the vocal cords are tense, it will hard to sing well with expression.

What about the role of the spine when you are ready to sing? If the spine is stretched out correctly with the singer leaning forward, it will help the diaphragm support the voice. With good posture, singers look more self-assured and give the audience the impression that they are good.

Stand securely with the feet on the ground. Balance should be satisfactory for the singer with no locking of the knees while standing. With one foot somewhat in front of the other and the shoulders relaxed, the voice should project in to the audience.

When someone is standing with an upright spine with shoulders held back, they look as if they are in charge and very confident. If the singer locks the knees it could create some problems with muscle tension and even breath control. It might help a beginning singer to look into the mirror occasionally to check on the correct stance when preparing to sing.

As a singer be aware of the instrument the as an instrument of the voice when you sing. This means that singers have to train themselves to have the correct posture when they sing. It is difficult at first, but well worth it because good posture gives any singer an edge over others

Playing the Guitar

Playing the Guitar - The History of Ibanez Guitars by Ignatius Gluck

Not only does the guitar itself have a rich and varied history but the companies that manufacture them are interesting as well. Everyone writes about the Gibson Les Paul and the Fender Strat but today let's talk about Ibanez guitars. Ibanez guitars have built a name and reputation for themselves. Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Pat Metheny, Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman of The Offspring all work their magic on Ibanez guitars. Vai designed the Ibanez JEM and Universe electric guitars. Satriani plays an Ibanez JS Series axe. Metheny tools around on an Ibanez PM120 guitar. Wassermann punks out on an Ibanez NDM series guitar. Many more artists have discovered Ibanez instruments.

The company that manufactures Ibanez guitars, Hoshino Gakki of Japan, went through a period of lawsuits brought against it for copying various models of Gibson, Fender and Rickenbacker guitars. I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all if you can get through trademark infringement.

Ardmore, Pennsylvania was the home of the "Elger" guitar, handmade instruments which were produced for a music store called Medley Music. Opened by Harry Rosenbloom in 1954 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania the business was having trouble finding guitars to sell. Guitars were very popular and manufacturers were having trouble keeping up with demand. To solve the problem Rosenbloom created a guitar manufacturing company called Elger Guitars. His children Ellen and Gerson were the inspiration for Elger.

In 1964 Rosenbloom ended guitar building and became a guitar importer. Elger Guitars signed on to be the North American distributors for the Hoshino Gakki Gen Company, the maker of Ibanez guitars. To appeal to guitarists with limited funds Ibanez produced axes that resembled Gibsons, Fenders and Rickenbackers and sold them for a lot less than the big name guitars.

Norlin, the parent company of Gibson, filed a lawsuit for trademark infringement. Ibanez settled out of court and began producing their own original guitar designs and vastly improved the quality of their products. Today Ibanez produces not only guitars, both electric and acoustic, but amps, effects boxes and assorted other guitar paraphernalia.

Whether you choose Ibanez, Gibson, Fender or another of the myriad guitar models available, just get your hands on one and learn how to play. Save gas and learn at home. The guitar courses I've reviewed are available at http://www.reviewsbytheigmonster.com
